In this publication, Dr. Daniel Vigo and other WHO World Mental Health Survey Collaborators analyze data from over 35,000 respondents of the WHO World Mental Health Survey to identify determinants of effective treatment coverage for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Results suggest that a majority of individuals reporting 12-month PTSD did not have adequate pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, or effective treatment coverage. Factors such as lack of insurance and mild clinical symptoms also predicted lower effective treatment coverage for those with PTSD. This paper serves as an indicator that pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy coverage for PTSD needs to be improved, particularly for individuals with mild symptoms and in low-and-middle income country contexts.
